The Eagles tennis team became the 13th victim to undefeated and Wesco North league leader Stanwood Wednesday, Oct. 4.
The 6-1 loss dropped the Eagles to 1-10 in league play and overall on the season and saw the visiting Spartans improve to 13-0.
Arlington freshman Eric McElroy picked up the lone victory on the sunny and breezy afternoon.
McElroy defeated Logan Combest-Friedman 6-2, 6-3 in No. 3 singles.
Head coach Ben Mendro said McElroys style of play seems to work for him and noted that the freshman has one of the best records on the team.
Despite falling to Nick Hovde 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in No. 4 singles, junior Austen Davis played arguably the most exciting match of the afternoon.
The Hovde-Davis match lasted nearly two hours and unfortunately for the teens very few of their teammates hung around to watch the action.
Davis said he couldve played better, but pointed to a broken racket earlier in the day that led to a new and unfamiliar feeling on the afternoon.
Asked about a wicked spin that he put on his return shots, he got a smile on his face and said, thats my only weapon.
Mendro said despite losing to the leagues top team he considered it a good showing.
I think overall we played good today, he said. Looking at some of these results we just cant quite get there (to find the winning ways). We need a few more weapons in our arsenal.
