MARYSVILLE — In a defensive sparring match, the Arlington and M-P fastpitch teams went seven rounds before the Tomahawks delivered the knockout punch.

From M-P pitcher Riley Fritz’s seven strikeouts in just over four innings to first baseman Skyler Peterson’s dives into the dirt to grab two Arlington bunts out of the air, M-P’s jabs against Arlington culminated in a 2-0 loss for the visitors in an April 9 rain date.

Fritz and Tomahawk pitcher Jen Rosie combined to throw a four-hitter and the Tomahawk defense backed them up, leaving Arlington stranded on base six times.

Junior shortstop Kristen Allen lead the Eagles offensively, batting 2-for-3 including a double. She led off for Arlington on both of her hits, but got no further than the scoring position.

“They are one of the few teams that have held us almost at second base,” said Arlington coach Dan Eng.

Until the bottom of the seventh, the game remained scoreless and the effort by Arlington pitcher Christina Rayner and her defense had the teams in a virtual draw.

Then, with Arlington looking for three outs to force an extra inning, M-P outfielder Anna West came up with a base hit. In the next at bat, the Tomahawk DH Marissa Lewis slugged a pitch deep to right center field, landing beyond the Arlington outfielders and getting the game-ending homer for Marysville.

Eng praised junior Allie Milless for her play at first base where she came up with eight stops, allowing no errors.

“She did what she was supposed to do leading off the in the seventh,” he added of the inning in which she hit a single.

Eng credited the Tomahawks for coming up with crucial plays that left Allen and Milless on base.

“We had some opportunities,” Eng said. “We didn’t execute the bunts properly. But you gotta give credit where credit’s due.”
