Several other Eagles compete well at 3A championships

PASCO Arlington thrower Kjirsten Jensen hadnt entertained the idea she could win both of her state events shot put and discus until she actually was named the 3A girls shot put champion on May 25, the first day of state competition.
The way Ive been throwing the last couple weeks, I didnt think I had it in me, Jensen said of her prospects in the shot put.
Indeed, in the juniors first career state appearance, she was placed in the first flight of throwers, among the shorter qualifying throws.
With a more than three-foot improvement on her qualifying throw of 34-4 and a little help from the upper echelon of the competition, Jensen won the shot put with a throw of 37-8. A half an inch gave her the state championship over Mt. Spokanes Sam Damiano.
Jensens stronger event, the discus, was a nail-biter on May 26, the meets second day. Port Angeles senior Kaylee Baumstark threw a 117-3 to match Jensens best throw. To settle the title, officials went to the girls second-best throws, and Jensens 117-2 gave her the edge.
With two titles to defend in her senior year, Jensen said shes planning to take the fall off from volleyball to focus on training for the basketball and track seasons.
Only two Eagles making state appearances wont return to improve on their outstanding seasons Arlington loses seniors Jeff Boyden and Shayna Prause to graduation.
Boyden took 14th of 16 competitors in the 3A boys discus, registering a best throw of 130-10 during the Friday competition.
Prause competed in the girls javelin, taking 13th out of 18 rivals with a throw of 107-3.
Several Arlington underclassmen go home from state this spring with their appetites whet to compete again next year.
Junior jumper and pole vaulter Ryan Schmipf finished his state-qualifying season with a berth in the high jump. Schimpf finished with a best jump of 5-10 in Saturday competition. He placed 15th, but his jump tied him with Camas Robert Cramer and ODeas Chris Wilson who placed ahead of him.
Faring a little better in his event was junior jumper Bryan Mack, who was seeded last in the 3A boys triple jump with a qualifying jump of 42-4. Mack bested that mark by almost two inches, launching him into 11th place out of 16 competitors and three spots out of medaling.
Also placing 11th was junior thrower Kurtis Hampton, whose throw a half-inch shy of 47 feet was better than five other competitors in Arlingtons class.
Junior Kevan Ferrier competed in the boys 300-meter hurdles preliminaries Friday. His time of 41.82 failed to qualify for finals the next day, but bested times from Bellevue, Sammamish and Skyline rivals. The state championship time in Ferriers event was 37.99, about a third of a second short of the 13-year-old record in 3A competition.
Arlingtons youngest state team returns all of its competitors after beating its qualifying time in Friday preliminaries. The Eagles 4×400-meter relay of Ginny Wilson, Amanda Wreggelsworth, Erin Taylor and Rachel Carey took seventh in their heat Friday with a time of 4:09.92.
The time failed to make them eligible for finals competition the next day.
In track competitions, team points are awarded to top eight finishes in each event. Jensens two first-place finishes gave the Arlington girls squad a 15th place finish out of 52 teams to earn points over the weekend.
