Lakewood, Arlington both win big (slide show)

The Arlington Eagles got off to a slow start, but then powered by Snohomish 26-9 in the third quarter to win going away 65-44 Tuesday night.

Junior guard Anthony Whitis again led the winners with 20 points. Jaren Cary, a senior wing, tallied 19. Junior guard Caden Smith contributed 12, and junior post Dele Aribibola also hit double figures with 10. Sophomore Will Abram and Jose Guttierrez scored two apiece.

With the win, Arlington is now 10-5, while Snohomish dropped to 5-10.

Whitis got an assist off an inbounds play to Cary, and Cary scored after grabbing an offensive rebound to put Arlington up early. Caden Smith scored with 14 seconds left in the first period, but Snohomish made a bucket at the buzzer to lead after one 13-10.

Arlington came back to tie it at halftime 22-22 after a low-scoring second quarter. But the Eagles took off in the third putting the game away as their offense clicked for 26 points, while their defense held the Panthers to only nine.

Meanwhile, in a game at Lakewood, the Cougar boys basketball team improved its record to 11-4 with a 63-48 romp over Meridian.

The home team had a balanced scoring attack while its defense held the visitors to almost a season low.

Seniors CJ McClellan, Kaleb Duitsman and Adam Duran led the way with 11 point apiece. Sophomore Alex Jensen and junior Austin Lane tallied 10 each. Senior Jon Cox had six and junior Machai Harris four. Lakewood led most of the game, taking a 18-16 lead after one, increasing it to 35-26 at halftime. Lane broke the game open in the third after a huge jump-stop move inside turned into a three-point play. McClellan followed that up with a nifty drive into the lane with some impressive hang time to put the Cougars up by 15. Lane’s offensive rebound and put-back shot at the buzzer made it 52-36 after three.

Jensen grabbed an offensive board that led to a three-point play, and Duran and McClellan each hits 3’s as Lakewood built up leads to as much as 19 in the last quarter.
