Lakewood softball to state; tracksters advance at districts

The Lakewood girls softball team qualified for state by winning two games Wednesday in Sedro Woolley.

After battling to a 2-2 tie after seven innings, the Cougars erupted for seven runs in the eighth.

Lynden came back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, but Lakewood held on to win 9-6.

Catcher Ashtyn Falor was the hitting star going 2-4 and driving in three runs. Olivia Poulton smacked a double and had 2 RBI.

Riley Swanson pitched nine innings, striking out five.

Despite the win, Lakewood had five errors, which helped keep Lynden in the game.

In the nightcap, however, Lakewood took advantage of five Cedarcrest errors to win 7-4, despite being outhit 13 to 6.

Another big inning for the Cougars, this one in the sixth with four runs, made the difference.

Jelly Perry stood out for the winners at the plate, knocking in three runs going 2-4 with a double.

Swanson was the winning pitcher.

Lakewood will play Sehome Friday at 6:30 p.m. for the district title.

Meanwhile, Lakewood’s track team hosted the 2A District Championships.

The Cougars did not have any district champs, but Yareli Ochoa placed second in the high jump at 5-foot-1 inches.

The boys had two second-place finishers – Dylan Madan with a 12-7 mark in the pole vault and Camden Burbee throwing the discus 154 feet, 8 inches.

Teammate Cole Nelson was second in the discus at 141-2, and Justin Labrecque was eighth in the pole vault at 10-1.

Lakewood also had some standouts in preliminary races. The finals are Friday.

Machai Harris was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.18. He was seventh in the 200 at 23.12. Spencer Fleming was sixth in the 400 in 53.08 and was on both relay teams.

The 4 by 100 relay that also included Dylan Madan, Jordan Gonzalez and George Toponce, finished fourth in 44.02 seconds. The 4 by 400, which also consisted of Gonzalez, Spencer Solvberg and Alex Jensen, was fifth in 3:38.48.

In the 800, Solvberg was fifth in 1:59.89 and Jensen eighth in 2:02.39.

For the girls, Ochoa was second in the 100 in 12.47 seconds. She teamed with Stella Seith, Alexis Allen, Emerson Jesus for a fifth-place finish in the 4 b 100 relay in 51.26.
