ARLINGTON – The upset-minded home team led most of the game and by as much as 17 points.

But visiting Marysville-Pilchuck outscored the Eagles 9-1 in the last 2 1/2 minutes for a 74-68 Wesco win Wednesday night.

After Luke Dobler’s bucket put M-P up 59-57 for its first lead since the middle of the second period, sophomore guard Ethan Martin scored the next 10 points for Arlington on two 3’s and four free throws. The last two were with 2:27 left, giving Arlington a 67-65 lead.

But Brady Phelps and Cameron Stordahl both scored inside, and after 6-10 Will Abram made an amazing block of Stordahl’s baseline drive to the hoop M-P ended the game with five free throws to close it out.

After trailing early in the game, the Eagles took a 16-12 lead when Martin hit a 3 at the buzzer.

They increased the margin to 22-15 on an inbounds play, but M-P tallied 10 straight, including a 3 by Stordahl and three more points when Ethan Jackson scored on an inbounds played and made a free throw after the foul.

Eagle Nick Lewis scored after an offensive rebound and a 3, followed by a 3 by Jackson. Then Arlington went on a 12-0 run.

After a steal and dunk under his own basket by Abram, it then became the Joseph Schmidt show just before half and at the start of the third period.

The 6-3 senior hit a deep 3, drove to the hoop for two, and made three free shots to put Arlington up 39-30 at halftime.

He hit two more 3’s and two freebies and put the home team up 47-30 with 6:50 left in the third.

Then M-P went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes. Phelps drove in for two and Aaron Kalab scored off the fastbreak. Dobler hit a 3 and Kalab scored inside to cut the lead to 49-43.

Junior Elson Battle came off the bench to spark M-P with an old-fashioned three-point play off a fastbreak and two free throws, but the Tomahawks still trailed 55-50 after three quarters.

Dobler hit a 3 then Ryan Brown scored on a backdoor play that seemed to work all night for the Eagles. Then both teams hit a cold streak before the final flurry of action.

Schmidt scored 16 points in the middle two quarters, but was held to one in the finale. Kalab sparked M-P with 16 second-half points.
