MARYSVILLE – The boys basketball team from Marysville-Pilchuck High School won big Tuesday night against Squalicum, but it lost big, too.

M-P beat the visiting Storm 65-48.

But with 2:18 left in the game star player Raequan Battle went down with an injury. It is unknown how severe it is, but his leg buckled, he fell in agony, and he had to be helped off the court. After the game he couldn’t put any weight on his right foot.

Battle scored 19 points before leaving the game.

But if fans thought M-P was a one-man team they will have to think again.

The Tomahawks didn’t score until 4:12 left in the first quarter after a steal and dunk by Battle. M-P actually trailed 12-7 at the end of the initial period, which was the Storm’s largest lead of the game.

A three-pointer by Kobe Bauman tied the game at 12, then the home team went up by five after a three-point play and another steal and dunk for Battle.

Then the 6-foot-5 junior left the game and the squad increased the lead to 35-25 at the half. Luke Dobler, a 6-1 sophomore guard, sparked the Tommies on that run with three foul shots and two three-pointers.

Josiah Gould stole the ball and passed it to Battle for his third thunderous dunk of the night to make it 41-27 in the middle of the third period. A three-pointer by Bauman put the Tomahawks up 46-30. Squalicum put on a full-court press with 2:29 left in the quarter, to no avail, as M-P led at the buzzer 49-32.

The Storm continued to struggle scoring against M-P’s scrappy defense, and after three-pointers by Dobler and Bauman the home team had its biggest lead of the evening at 52-34.

The visitors scored three-straight three-pointers to cut into the lead, but Battle scored three inside buckets to ice the game at 58-43 with 3:01 remaining. He was injured soon after.

M-P ended the game with a 3 by Dobler, a pick-and-roll from Dobler to Corbin Sims and a drive by Gould.

Dobler led the team with 21 points, Bauman had 13, Sims and Aaron Kalab had four each, and Gould and Deacon Monger had two each.

M-P, 3-0, plays at home Saturday against Marysville Getchell starting at 7 p.m.
