M-P girls win first game at state Friday 6-2 (slide show)

Marysville-Pilchuck continued its winning ways this season Friday with a 6-2 win over Prairie in the first round of the state softball tournament.

The Tomahawks will play again at 4.

Last week in Everett, after giving up Meadowdale’s first hit of the game, Marysville-Pilchuck pitcher McKenzie Justice tweaked her leg. She said the dirt was hard as cement when she would stride out after her follow-through.

After pouring some water on the area, it must have been to her liking as she struck out eight and allowed just that one hit over seven innings as M-P moved on in the state playoffs, which start Friday in Lacey.

Justice also stood out at the plate in the 8-0 3A win. After striking out her first time up, she blasted two home runs.

Leadoff hitter Chloe Morgan scored the only run the Tomahawks needed in the top of the first inning. She scored on a fielder’s choice with junior catcher Sydney Zachry getting the RBI.

In the third inning, M-P, which is 20-4 on the year, make it 3-0 after junior Lily Fischer hit it over the fence with Morgan aboard. Morgan scored four of the Tommies runs.

Justice followed with a solo shot to center field.

Morgan earned her second inside-the-park home run of the tourney after a deep line drive that was misplayed by the leftfielder.

Justice continued to help herself on the mound with an opposite-field shot to right-center in the seventh.

Katie Barrett and sophomore Alissa Edge also drove in runs with sacrifice flies for the Tomahawks.
