ARLINGTON A furious rally by the Stilly Rapids Single A baseball team came up well short against Stanwood as they fell 15-8 at Arlington High School. After digging a huge early hole, the Rapids fought back and made it a game before falling in seven innings.
The game came on the heels of Stanwoods 10-run rule victory over Stilly the previous week, as the Rapids showed great improvement but not enough to claim victory.
By the middle of the third inning, the Rapids trailed 14-1. Their pitching could not cool off the hot Pioneer bats. Coach Jeff Smith called the team together for a stern lecture before their turn at bat in the third.
Whatever Smith told the team worked. They awoke from their slumber and began to claw their way back into contention. Carson Zednick reached on an error and later scored on a Garth Rose RBI single. Tim Hancock and Dillon Jorgensen also drove in runs in the inning to give the Rapids some hope, down 14-4.
The Rapids added two more runs in the fourth inning as Tyler Wendland and Carson Zednick both scored runs for the home side. Garth Rose notched another RBI single and the Rapids managed to claw within 15-6.
In the fifth inning, Kyle Hammon led off with a walk. Kyle Smith drove a double toward the left-centerfield wall that brought Hammon around to third base. Tyler Wendland followed with a double of his own to score another run for Stilly. After a walk to load the bases, Stilly had a chance to get right back into the game. Only a hard luck pop-out from Garth Rose on a ball that barely stayed in play ended the inning.
In their last at bat, the Rapids pushed across another run. Tyler Wendland singled and Carson Zednick singled right behind him to put runners on the corners with one out. A fielders choice brought home a run to make the score 15-8 in favor of Stanwood and the Rapids would get no closer.
