Regional champs Myers, Dickerson on to state

SNOHOMISH — Arlington wrestling is sending a couple of freight trains to the state wrestling tournament.

While seniors Chris Myers and Bryant Dickerson are considered more like dark horses than favorites to be named state champions at the Mat Classic Feb. 20 and 21, they couldn’t have better momentum coming out of regionals.

Both followed district championships a week earlier with regional championships, Feb. 14, in Snohomish.

Both wrestlers credit their experience with first-year head coach Shaun Williams for giving them the technique to pursue their goals this season.

“I wasn’t going to be satisfied with just going to state. One of my goals was to go undefeated this year,” said Myers, a two-time state wrestler at 3A, who will compete in Arlington’s first year at 4A since 2006.

Myers missed that goal, losing an early-season match in a non-conference tournament to an Enumclaw wrestler.

“That was a stepping stone for me,” Myers said.

Since that tournament in Sedro-Woolley, Myers has been undefeated this year. At regionals, he made it look easy, coming out of his first-round bye to pin Masih Ahmad in less than a minute. In his second match, he pinned Auburn’s Michael Karpstein late in the first round, a rival he’ll meet again in his first match at the Mat Classic.

In the regional championship, Myers took down Kent-Meridian’s Nick Lemmon 47 seconds into the second round after leading 2-0.

Despite his season, Myers is ranked No. 6 in the state at 160 pounds, behind a handful of kids coming out of different regions. (His teammate, Dickerson, is ranked third in the heavyweight division.) But, as a ranked wrestler, he expects to be sporting an invisible target on his back at the Tacoma Dome.

He’ll be looking for at least one other wrestler while he’s there.

“I know that the No. 1-ranked kid in the state, Tyler Story, is a senior,” Myers said. “I wrestled him in Reno a couple of years back and he beat me by two points.”

Seeded on opposite ends of the bracket, the two could potentially meet in a state championship match.

Dickerson also comes into the Mat Classic seeded highly in his bracket. He defeated Lake Stevens’ Zach Tueber in the regional championship match again, this time winning a 4-1 decision in double overtime. He got to that match by winning a 6-4 decision over Nick Conlan of Auburn, who will be No. 3 out of the Snohomish regional.

Dickerson will face Michael Marboe of Wenatchee in his first match and could potentially wrestle No. 2 Allan Thompson from Rogers (Puyallup) in a semifinal match.

Three other Arlington wrestlers placed at regionals, sophomore Nathan Shortt at 140 pounds and juniors Chris Berg (130) and Brady Quinton (215).
