Arlington soccer clobbers Monroe

Kristina Longosky and Jessica Van Loo each tallied goals for the Arlington Eagles girls soccer team as they blanked Monroe 2-0 on Sept. 20. Coach Nathan Davis was pleased with the teams effort, earning the shutout.
We broke through against them, said Davis. Weve been outplaying teams without any results to show for it, but tonight we got a good result.
Longoskys goal came after Davis moved her to central midfield, a new position for her.
Not only did Kristina score for us, said Davis, she served several impressive balls into the box for our forwards to run onto.
Davis also singled out Amanda Wreggelsworth for her contribution to the defense.
Amanda did a good job as a marking back, said the coach. We put her in a new spot and she helped us earn our first shutout.
Andrea Parlin finished with six saves in goal for the Eagles.

Heartbreak for Lakewood girls soccer

Up against powerhouse Cedarcrest, the Lakewood girls soccer team needed to be flawless. The Sept. 18 matchup might have ended in a tie, but a late defensive breakdown by the Cougars cost them a point in the standings. They lost 3-2 on a header from a corner kick, four minutes into stoppage time in the second half.
Anna Work, again showing incredible energy, put the Cougars ahead 1-0 just 10 minutes into the game. CHS tied it before halftime and went ahead early in the second half 2-1. Lakewood kept pressing forward and Courtney Prosser converted a free kick to knot the score 2-2.
For Lakewood it was the first time they had scored on Cedarcrest in three years.
We overcame a mental obstacle today, said Coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth. The last two years theyve finished second and third in state. For us to be in the game was a tribute to how far weve come. We can play with anybody now.
Wohlgemuth again praised Anna Works performance, noting that the senior forward never stops hustling on the field.
Anna started her first game for us, said Wohlgemuth. Shes relentless out there, playing 100 miles-per-hour the entire time. She energizes the team and has been an incredible playmaker for us.

Highland Christian Prep wins first ever football game

Highland Christian Prep defeated Darrington JV 38-14 in a non-league, 11-man football match. Highland scheduled the Sept. 18 game to round out their schedule and play a nearby opponent given that many of their games require long travel.
Caleb Brown opened the scoring for Prep, going 15 yards around the end for a first-quarter touchdown. Three minutes later Stormee Brown added his own rushing TD, racing in from 25 yards out. Highland tacked on another score before halftime as Vince Kurtzenacker tossed a 40-yard TD pass to John Enge.
In the second half Kurtzenacker tossed another long bomb, this time to Jeff Kelly for Preps fourth score. Darrington got on the board thanks to a 12-yard rushing TD from Robert Gillete but Highland answered with a Chase Fuller 23-yard rushing touchdown.
In the fourth quarter Highland got a dazzling return from Cody Mattson, weaving 70 yards down the field on a kickoff for the games final score.
Its our first win in the programs history, said an elated Coach Joey Brown. And we played 11-man football to boot. Considering we are an eight-man program, thats a great win.

Lakewood grinds out Kings

The offensive line dominated for Lakewood during their Sept. 21 game against Kings, allowing the Cougars running game some wide lanes to zip through.
Lakewood won convincingly 18-7, a score which does not show their overall dominance. Quarterback Jay Wettlauffer finished with 142 yards on 27 carries and halfback Ernest Mitchell added 114 yards as Lakewood punished Kings on the ground.
I was pleased with the effort, said Coach Dan Teeter. The kids played with a lot of enthusiasm. We were the more physical team today. It was good to see us playing football the right way.
The game opened with some adversity for Lakewood as they fumbled the opening kickoff back to Kings. The Knights took over on the 15-yard line and made Lakewood pay for the turnover, going in for a 7-0 lead.
After that point, the Cougars defense got stingy and refused to budge. They held Kings to a paltry 117 yards of total offense. While the defense, led by Joey Davenport, was keeping the Knights offense stalled, the Cougar offense took up large chunks on the ground. Lineman Davenport, Josh Rose, Steven Marquadt, John Rundle and Max Dragitch kept moving the Kings line backward.
The score could have been much worse, said Teeter. We outgained them considerably.
It took a late defensive stand on the Cougar 10-yard line on a fourth-down play to preserve the victory. Davenport and Rose stuffed a Knights plunge into the line, giving the offense the ball back. Lakewood turned right around and drove the length of the field for the game clinching score.
Lakewood plays next Sept. 28 against Archbishop Murphy.

Loggers breeze past Shoreline Christian

The Darrington Logger volleyball team continued their impressive start to the season, winning handily over Shoreline Christian on Sept. 20. The final score 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 accurately stated the Loggers control of the match from the outset.
We set the tone early, said Coach Greg Powell. We felt good the whole time.
Shoreline Christian served to start the first game and Kaitlyn Pendergrass made sure they knew they were in for a long night. Taking a quick set from Mandy Powell, Pendergrass hammered home a powerful kill to give Darrington the early momentum.
They were on their heels from that point on, said Coach Powell.
Natasha Green led the Loggers with 10 kills and Mandy Powell continued her strong play with 32 assists and five service aces.
I feel like were performing well, said Powell. The skill level has improved and it helps to have so many seniors. At this point Im pleased with where were at.
Darrington improved to 4-1 on the young season. Powell remains guardedly optimistic about the team.
Were going to focus on making sure that we are getting our points by playing well, not by relying on our opponents to make mistakes.

Loggers take down last years champs

The Darrington Logger football team continued its success in defeating Orcas Island 41-7 on Sept. 21.
The Loggers formiddable group of seniors pounded the younger Orcas team behind the stellar line play of Chris Vargas and Scott Rebelbrugge. Quarterback Mark Jones threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Green and also ran for two scores. Running back Justin ODell finished with a whopping 173 yards on the ground, as well as returning an interception 80 yards for a touchdown.
Mike Parris opened the game for Darrington with an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Parris later added a 15-yard touchdown run.
They were tough in the first half, said Coach Fred Emerson. I told our guys at halftime that there is a reason why they have been champions. Theyre not going to give up, theyre going to fight to the final whistle.
Orcas trailed by 13 points at the half and never got any closer. Darringtons superior strength on the lines was overwhelming.
Were a much more mature team, said Emerson. Weve got some seniors who have decided they want to win and right now its all coming together.
Darrington faces LaConner next on Friday, Sept. 28.
