Sticks n’ Chicks pummel Cascade

ARLINGTON — After losing their first game of the season on July 27, Sticks n’ Chicks bounced back and defeated Cascade Valley 15-5 Wednesday, Aug. 3, in an Arlington Parks and Recreation coed softball game at Twin Rivers Park.

“Both teams played well but we just came out and played a little better tonight,” Sticks n’ Chicks pitcher Eric Wilson said. “Our bats were on fire and it’s hard to stop a team when they are hitting the ball well. Cascade is a good, young team. They we will get things together and win some games.”

Sticks n’ Chicks collected more than 15 hits in the victory and improved to 3-1. Cascade dropped to 0-4 with three games remaining in the season.

“We are a new team,” Cascade Valley’s Berry Casteel said. “I think that is where our struggles begin. We aren’t sure about our strengths and where those strengths should be at on the field or in the lineup. We started well tonight, but they are such a powerful team. I am sure that they’d tell you that we are all out here to have fun. Even though we lost we still had a good time.”

Sticks n’ Chicks have scored nearly 50 runs this season. The only game where they scored less than 10 runs came on July 27, in an 18-9 loss to Country Charm. In their victory over Cascade Valley, Sticks n’ Chicks collected more than 15 hits, most of which came later in the game.

“We can score, that’s for sure,” Sticks n’ Chicks’ Matt Rolf said. “But Cascade has played good defense tonight. They gave us a scare early though.”

Casteel helped spark Cascade Valley in the first inning with a solo home run, his first of the season. The team scored two more runs to take a 3-0 lead.

Sticks n’ Chicks rallied and scored four runs in the first inning and three runs in the second to take a 7-3 lead. Cascade Valley gained some momentum in the fourth inning when it scored two runs. But that narrow deficit didn’t last long. Sticks n’ Chicks  rattled off nine hits and scored eight runs in the fifth inning to preserve the victory. Travis Boortz had two doubles and scored three runs. Patrick Ryan and Jason Tyner scored two runs each.
