While top 10 lists like the one under your nose in The Times might be creeping up all over the place, let’s take a look at some of the possible stories to make the 2010 list.

Of course, everything starts with football and coach Greg Dailer has the Eagles ready to make an impact in the Wesco Conference next season.

And that’s the same for Lakewood, as the Cougars will return key offensive players and plan to air it out.

More immediate stories are the wrestling and boys basketball teams this winter. While Nick Brown’s boys have struggled of late, their potential is up there with the top end of the conference. Also, Shaun Williams has his wrestlers improving about as well as can be expected, and continuing to improve. Their confidence is just a couple of double dual wins away.

All Lakewood wrestling fans’ eyes will be focused on Keely Caldwell and her bid for a state championship. And all Cougar hoops fans will be waiting for Lakewood to fulfill its potential on the court, and when it does, everyone will realize these boys have a “wow” factor.

In the spring time all of those cross country runners who competed at the state level will be at it again, along with young throwers Blake McPherson and Stephanie Van Slagerin. That is the same for Lakewood, as Taylor Guske and company will be competing for a spot on the state podium.

The Arlington soccer teams were both young last year and enjoyed enough success to give the impression that they will be competing for one of the District 1 spots.

Lakewood soccer, which fell short of the state tournament last year, can be improved upon. There is also baseball and softball and the Arlington area’s tradition in those sports suggests that they will be at the top of the league.

And once the summer is over, we get to do it all over again. One thing is for sure, there is no shortage of cross country runners in this area, with both Lakewood teams advancing to state and the Arlington girls in 2009.

In short, 2010 has the potential to be even better than 2009.
