MARYSVILLE – The two new Marysville City Council members, and one returning one, took the oath of office Tuesday night.

Mayor Jon Nehring swore in newcomers Tom King and Mark James, along with Jeff Vaughan. Another returnee, Michael Stevens, missed the ceremony.

“Thank you everyone who helped get me here,” James said.

King added, “This has been a dream of mine for years.”

Vaughan thanked his wife “for holding down the fort for years. I look forward to working with you newcomers and the rest of the old-timers.”

Before the three short ceremonies, Nehring said, “A lot of hard work went into the long campaigns.”

The only major item on the work session agenda had to do with a committee’s recommendation for $334,000 in Community Development Block Grants. The panel recommended spending close to the maximum on administration and public services – almost 20 percent and 15 percent – and almost the minimum on capital projects – 65 percent.

If approved by the council Monday, the city would get $66,000 for planning and administration, a 19.76 percent piece of the pie.

Public services would get 14.97 percent, or $50,000. Topping that list is $17,500 for the Marysville Food Bank’s Food for Thought weekend program, followed by $13,891 for Housing Hope’s Beachwood Apartments, $12,000 for Homage Senior Services Meals on Wheels and $6,609 for Volunteer Chore Services, which is under the umbrella of Catholic Community Services.

Under capital projects, the biggest chunk would go to the city for its crosswalk improvement plan, at $86,000. Homage would get $81,000 for its minor home repair with the Boys and Girls Club of Snohomish County getting $51,000 for capital upgrades. Also at the meeting, Public Works director Kevin Nielsen talked about a new software program for $124,830 that would “take public works into the next decade.”

Council president Kamille Norton recommended committee appointments for the new board. She said she made them in regard to requests, interests, availability and if it was a good fit.

“We can change the appointment at any time if we need to,” she said.
