Rotary’s Great Stilly Duck Dash makes big splash for local causes

If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet for the 2017 Great Stilly Duck Dash, you had better get quakin’.

Lame jokes aside, the return of the rubber ducks race on the Stillaguamish River hosted by the Arlington Rotary Club is a chance to win big bucks for a good cause that you don’t want to let float by.

Tickets will be sold around town on the 4th of July by any Arlington Rotarians at $5 for a single ticket, or $20 for five. Look for them at the beer garden in Haller Park, pancake breakfast, Foam Run, Pedal-Paddle-Puff race, and the parades until 6:30 p.m.

The rubber duck race will start at 7:30 p.m., with front-end loaders raining ducks from the Lincoln Bridge into the Stillaguamish River, and ending downriver at Haller Bridge.

The first duck with the entry ticket to cross the bridge will win $5,000, five second-place finishers $1,000 each, and 10 people will pocket $100.

The duck dash is one of Arlington Rotary’s largest and most highly anticipated fundraisers.

Rotarian Jessica Ronhaar said funds raised will support a variety of community organizations. Groups include Youth Dynamics, the Stillaguamish Senior Center, Arlington Kids’ Kloset, Arlington Boys & Girls Club and Arlington High School Neobots robotics team, the latter of which are the Grand Parade marshals.

This year, Rotary plans to bring more music, crafts and carnival games to Haller Park to give community members and visitors more reasons to stay.

Last year, 17,372 tickets were sold and $212,275 raised from sales, local business sponsorship and matching funds from the Stillaguamish Tribe. Funds were contributed toward the splash pad project and other improvements in Haller Park that will bring enjoyment to families for years to come.

In preparation for the festivities, duck mascots “Splishy” and “Splashy” are crowned. This year, Carla Rankin Gastineau and Jim Kelly have become the newest members of the Order of the Duck. Gastineau is general manager of the Stillaguamish Athletic Club; Kelly is the city of Arlington Public Works Director. Both are club members.

Angel of the Winds Casino is sponsoring yellow duck calls on lanyards to promote the Duck Dash.
