Arlington improved its record to 3-1 this week blanking Marysville-Pilchuck 6-0.

“I am fairly surprised at how well we are doing, considering we graduated 80 percent of our varsity team,” Eagle coach Ben Mendro admitted Thursday. “Arlington has never had any kind of tennis tradition, so maybe we’re starting to build something.”

Freshman Vincent Loftis has made a big impact, shooting his way to No. 3 singles. Two sophomores, Taras McCurdie and Ben Nichols, have improved a lot, he said, winning most of their matches.

“They both played a lot of off-season tennis and shot up from JV to top positions on varsity,” Mendro said.

He said senior captains Conner Fochesato and Will Eckley are great leaders, and Dominic Palmisano has stepped up his game.

“He only started playing two years ago, but he really caught the bug and has been playing regularly down at the Mill Creek tennis club and taking a lot of lessons,” the coach said. Against M-P, Fochesato beat Parker Devereaux 6-1, 6-1; McCurdie edged Connor Peterson 7-6 (6-4) and 6-3; Loftis blanked Trae Tingelstad 6-0, 6-0; and Palmisano beat Jake Sulya 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, two of the matches went to three sets, but the Eagles still came out winners.

At No. 1, Ben Spores-Nichols beat Aaron Kalab-Dan Kirkwood 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3, while at No. 3 Cody Perdue-Tomas Ramirez got by Dawson Coe-Treven Southard 6-4, 4-6 and 6-1. In another close doubles match at No. 2, Johnathon Leon-Guerrero-Dean Shepherd edged Coby Nelson-Kobe Bauman 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Both teams played two other matches this week.

The Tomahawk tennis team fell to Monroe 7-0 Sept. 8.

Kalab-Kirkwood were the only Tommies to take it to three sets, losing 4-6, 6-4 and 4-6 at No. 1 doubles.

Everyone else lost in two sets: Devereaux 1-6, 5-7; Luke Dobler 4-6, 3-6; Peterson 1-6, 1-6; Sulya 0-6, 5-7; Coe-Southard 1-6, 4-6 and Bauman-Tingelstad 2-6, 0-6.

Dobler was the only one to take a match to three sets, going 6-3, 1-6 and 5-10.

Devereaux and Sulya were blanked and Peterson lost 3-6, 2-6 in the other singles match.

In doubles, Kalab-Kirkland again had the best showing, falling 5-7, 2-6. Coe-Southard lost 1-6, 3-6 and Tingelstad-Bauman 1-6, 2-6.

The Arlington boys beat Lynnwood 7-0 Sept. 7, but then Lost to Lake Stevens 7-0.

The Eagles completely dominated, winning 84 games in the seven matches, compared with 15 for the home team.

In the singles matches, Fochesato won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles; McCurdie 6-0, 6-1; Loftis 6-1, 6-3; and Palmisano also won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
