Arlington winter sports warming up

ARLINGTON — After the retirement of Rick Iversen, Arlington’s new wrestling coach is excited for the opportunity.

“As the defending 3A State Wrestling Champions we have a lot to live up to,” Jonathan “Jonny” Gilberston said. “We graduated a large number of wrestlers that were key factors in last year’s championship run. However, we have the ‘Next guy up’ mentality, and our team this season is ready to step up to the challenge.”

Arlington returns state wrestlers seniors Colton Ferro and Cooper McCauslan, who both placed fifth last season; and juniors Gavin Rork, who was second, and Will Rush, seventh.

The girls wrestling program is “growing” as well. Gilbertson said he was most-excited for seniors Jordynn Mani and J’lanaye Julien.

ARLINGTON — The Arlington boys basketball team is starting some youngsters. “We have a huge learning curve right now, but it’s fun,” Arlington coach Nick Brown said. “They want to learn.” But it does return “battle tested” leaders, senior guards Drew Bryson and junior Sam Tregoning. Brown is expecting particular leadership from the three-year starter Bryson.

“He’s going to have to shoot, lead and defend,” Brown said. Some of the younger starters are coming off of Arlington’s football team, such as sophomore Griffin Gardoski and junior Jaren Carey. “They bring a lot of athleticism,” Brown said. Though a young team, Brown wants to bring back some of the tradition that berths a playoff spot.

“We’ve obviously had some good runs before,” Brown said. “We want to get back and make some noise.”
