ARLINGTON — Highland Christian School’s Knowledge Bowl team made it to the state championships in their second year as a team this year.

Although the team placed fourth in the written test portion of the state championships in Spokane on March 26, Highland Christian School spokesperson Denise Macklin deemed this performance “an incredible accomplishment” for the two-year-old team.

“Highland is a 1B school that plays in the 2B category against significantly larger schools because no other 1B schools in the division participate in Knowledge Bowl,” Macklin said. “During the season, Highland competed against public schools in Snohomish, Skagit, Island and Whatcom counties.”

Knowledge Bowl is an academic competition which covers a wide variety of subjects, including, mathematics, literature, grammar, chemistry, physics, history, and even sports and music. Each competition includes one written test and three oral rounds. The written round is a multiple-choice exam taken by each team. In the oral rounds, Knowledge Bowl teams go head to head. After an oral question is given, teams compete to answer the fastest by hitting buzzers to give their answers.

Highland Knowledge Bowl student team member Ted Taft described the state competition as “a very fun event that put our memory and brainpower to the test.”

“Competing in Knowledge Bowl is like standing in front of a target,” fellow Highland student team member Hannah Gould said. “You never know what’s going to hit you next, but it’s fun to test your quick recall skill with each new challenge.”
