ARLINGTON — One of the city’s stimulus projects should soon be going out to bid.

On Monday, Dec. 21, the City Council was scheduled to approve the city opening up its Gifford Street sidewalk project to bid.

The project, which includes installing sidewalks, curbs, gutters and other related items in a two-block stretch of Gifford between Haller Middle School and Presidents Elementary, will be funded by a $92,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant.

The act primarily provides federal stimulus funds to infrastructure projects throughout the United States.

Other project funds will be provided by about $28,500 in city traffic mitigation monies, according to a city memo.

Should the Council approve the item, the city will advertise the project to contractors starting Dec. 21.

Bids are scheduled to open on Feb. 4. The Council is tentatively set to award the contract during its Feb. 16 meeting.

The sidewalk project will provide students a place to talk to and from school, city and school district officials said.

“Right now, a lot of the people going from the two schools walk in the road,” said Jim Kelly, Arlington Public Works Director in August.

The city of Arlington also received about $122,000 in stimulus funds for a trail project on 188th Street NE.
