OSO — While many of the businesses in Oso are no strangers to surmounting obstacles presented by surrounding environmental conditions, from floods to the area’s previous slide within the past decade, the March 22 slide across State Route 530 has them in a bind the likes of which they’ve never dealt with before.
DARRINGTON — The Washington State Department of Transportation recognized the need for another route in and out of Darrington, so after five weeks of slide detours that added multiple hours and hundreds of miles to motorists’ commutes, WSDOT opened the Seattle City Light Access Road to local and emergency traffic starting at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, to bypass the section of State Route 530 still blocked by the slide.
In the wake of the special election on Tuesday, April 22, the city of Arlington looks to be passing its proposed permanent levy lid lift, while the Lakewood School District is on the knife’s edge of possibly passing its proposed building bond to improve Lakewood High School, on its second time on the ballot.
ARLINGTON — The Arlington Police Department will be taking back unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the police station itself, located at 110 E. Third St. in Arlington. This disposal service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.
ARLINGTON — The city of Arlington is aiming to alleviate some of the strains being suffered by first responders and other community members in the wake of the Oso mudslide.
ARLINGTON — Those who take a test drive at Rairdon’s Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, located at 16610 Smokey Point Blvd. in Arlington, between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, will be helping to support the Arlington High School chapter of Future Farmers of America.
ARLINGTON — When Gov. Jay Inslee visited Arlington earlier in the month to join the community in mourning for those who had been lost to the Oso mudslide, he met Arlington High School senior Kaitlyn Toomey, who asked him a question that was relevant not only to those who had been displaced by the slide, but also to her own circumstances.
BRYANT — The North County Firefighters Association is yet again inviting the community to its pancake breakfast, which kicks off this year on Sunday, April 27.
SMOKEY POINT — This year’s Village Community Services gala fundraiser will run from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at the Medallion Hotel, located at 16710 Smokey Point Blvd.
OSO — President Barack Obama’s visit to the area on Tuesday, April 22, culminated in a press conference in the Oso Fire Station that afternoon, after he’d had a chance to survey the damage done by the March 22 Oso mudslide, as well as to speak with the slide’s first responders and the families of the slide’s victims.
ARLINGTON — Although they weren’t able to move past the Pacific Northwest District Championships in Portland, Ore., on Friday, April 11, the Arlington High School NeoBots FIRST Robotics Team 2903 ultimately achieved its most successful season in its six years of competing against other schools in the FIRST Robotics Competition.
SMOKEY POINT — Snohomish County and Washington State Department of Transportation officials answered questions and responded to the concerns of citizens during a Wednesday, April 16, community meeting on how their agencies plan to deal with the wake of the Oso mudslide.
OSO — In an effort to demonstrate their care, concern and generosity to the community of Oso, Thrivent Financial and the Oso Community Chapel are seeking donations and volunteers to assist with an Oso tribute memorial on Saturday, April 26.
