ARLINGTON — Robin Price’s youngest son used to be angry before he met Mark Dolan.
But after a series of weekly appointments with the then-elementary school counselor, Price’s son began to make progress.
“Without Mr. Dolan, I would have made a lot of mistakes with him,” Price told the Arlington School Board on Monday, July 12. “My son needs him at Eagle Creek next year.”
Price was one of about 10 parents and community members criticizing school officials’ decision to eliminate the position belonging to Dolan — the district’s only elementary school counselor — in wake of budget cuts.
Dolan served all five of the district’s elementary schools during the 2009-10 school year, and spent one day a week at each school.
SEATTLE — Two individuals involved in the Blue Stilly Smoke Shop cigarette case have been sentenced in U.S. District Court.
Rick Conn, a cigarette broker based in California, was sentenced to 20 months in prison, while Carol M. Silverman, who owned a cigarette distribution business in Oregon, was sentenced to 12 months and a day in prison on Friday, July 9.
Additionally, Conn and Silverman will each have to serve three years of supervised release and repay a combined $38 million in restitution, according to the U.S. District Attorney’s Office.
ARLINGTON — While school may have just let out for the summer, a Northwest grocery store and pharmacy chain is selling backpacks to benefit local school districts.
On Saturday, July 10, Haggen Food & Pharmacy began selling specially designed backpacks at its Arlington (20115 74th Avenue NE) and Marysville (3711 88th Street NE) locations.
Those backpacks, which are filled with school supplies such as paper, pencils and crayons, can be purchased and donated back for $9.99.
The packs will be distributed to children in need by local schools and organizations.
