ARLINGTON — Casey Corcoran wants to support the Arlington Boys and Girls Club because he used to benefit from its programs.

The 17-year-old incoming senior at Arlington High School is staging a fundraiser golf tournament for the Boys and Girls Club at the Gleneagle Golf Course Sept. 26, but it wasn’t that long ago that he was hanging out at the Boys and Girls Club himself.

“When I was 10 years old, or maybe even younger, I played basketball there and was part of the Stilly Valley Little League on the nearby ball field,” Corcoran said. “My dad was a volunteer coach and I spent lots of time and made lots of friends there. The Boys and Girls Club is a great place for kids to get started in activities. Especially today, it’s good for them to have a positive place to hang out.”

When it came time for Corcoran to choose a senior project, he was swayed by his fond memories of the Arlington Boys and Girls Club in years past, as well as his continued pleasant interactions with its staff.

“They have a bunch of new activities since I was a kid and all their employees are super nice,” Corcoran said. “Kevin Coghill, their athletic director, teaches the fundamentals of golf. At the Boys and Girls Club, kids can learn the fundamentals of sports and see if they’re interested in pursuing any of them. It helps young people develop hobbies.”

Corcoran was equally complimentary toward the staff of the Gleneagle Golf Course, whom he credits with helping him organize the tournament and “giving away” a number of services to him. Still, Corcoran is in need of hole sponsorships and raffle prize donations, as well as enough golfers for a four-person scramble start.

“A veterinarian is giving away a free spaying or neutering as their prize, and another prize we’ve received is a weekend at a timeshare in Chelan,” said Cindy Corcoran, Casey’s mother.

“Also, on the fifth hole, people can pay a dollar a shot to try and out drive me,” Casey Corcoran said.

Casey Corcoran has even contacted Coca-Cola and Pepsi to see if they’d be willing to help sponsor the event.

The $65-per-person admission covers the cost of participating in the tournament, using a cart on the course and receiving a taco buffet dinner at the end of the evening. Check-in starts at 12:15 p.m., and mulligans, raffle tickets and 50/50s will all be available for purchase.
