Friday the 13th unlucky for foes of local football teams (slide show)

It was Friday the 13th, but it was only unlucky for the four teams playing our local teams.

All four teams won easily, outscoring their opponents 161-21.

Arlington

Cole Cramer and Cade Younger each returned interceptions for touchdowns to lead the Eagles to a 33-7 win over defending champion Squalicum in a Wesco 3A North matchup.

Cramer’s came in the second quarter for 34 yards as Arlington took a 12-7 halftime lead.

Younger’s came in the third period for a 95-yard score that gave the home team a 26-7 lead just when it looked like the visitors might cut it to 19-14.

Andrew Brotherton also intercepted a pass for the Eagles.

The interceptions were key to the win, as the Storm was able to run the ball effectively. Ben Schlenbacker was a workhorse, running for 181 yards on 30 carries.

Sophomore QB Trent Nobach hit a 13-yard TD to Gage Price to open the scoring in the first period. After Cramer’s score, the Eagles had a chance to run out the clock, but threw an interception, leading to Squalicum’s only score.

Jacob Kramer took the opening kickoff 54 yards then scored on a 13-yard run to give Arlington the momentum back. After Younger’s back-breaker, Kramer’s 49-yard run set up his own 7-yard TD.

Nobach was 10-for-16 for 134 yards, but had three interceptions. Kramer had 79 yards on seven carries. Levi Younger had two catches for 44 yards.

The Eagles may have been inspired by the presence of members of the Arlington state football champions of 1979, who celebrated the 40th anniversary of their 49-14 romp over Mark Morris. That team still holds a state record for most first downs in a game with 28. Kicker Mike Wold also holds a state record for seven points-after-touchdowns in the contest.

Jim Kavaney was the coach, who also led the Eagles to a state title in 1982 with a 16-3 win over Franklin Pierce.

Rich Senff, owner of Action Sports in town, played on the ’79 squad.

Team members were introduced at halftime. A dinner the night before by the Arlington Gridiron Club honored them.

Marysville-Pilchuck

The Tomahawks had an easy time with Oak Harbor, winning the Wesco 3A North game 42-0.

Jordan Justice scored on runs of 58 and 22 yards. Dillon Kuk scored on a 65-yard run, Jay Gray scored on a 9-yard run, Dylan Carson scored from a yard out, and Kyle Nyblod scored on a 52-yard interception return.

Carson led the team with 104 yards on 10 carries, while Justice added 76 yards on just four carries. QB Jake Elwood was 3-for-3 for 67 yards, with Justice catching one for 42 yards and Kuk two for 25 yards.

Marysville Getchell

Phillip Melomey ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries to lead MG to a 37-14 Wesco 3A North victory at Stanwood.

Landyn Olson scored on a 23-yard pass from Josiah Koellmer, who scored on a 1-yard run in the second period. After Cameron Hazelwood hit a 27-yard field goal, Melomey scored his two 2-yard runs. After Stanwood scored twice in the final stanza, Auston Byron scored for the Chargers on a 19-yard run.

Koellmer threw for 134 yards, connecting on 13-of-24 passes. Cheron Smith ran for 94 yards on 15 carries and Byron had 70 on 12.

Olson had six catches for 95 yards.

Lakewood

The Cougars trounced Bellingham 49-0.

Jared Taylor ran for scores of 26 and 16 yards and passed for two more – one to Morgan Stacey for 12 yards, the other 8 yards to Hayden Richardson.

Landon Pruitt opened the scoring on a 9-yard-run, and Justice Taylor ended it with a 10-yard jaunt. Pruitt also ran it in from 14 yards in the third quarter.

Taylor completed 13 of 17 passes for 165 yards and had 92 yards rushing on nine carries.

Pruitt had 141 yards on 12 carries. Carson Chrisman caught six passes for 93 yards.
