Where do the Olympic speed skaters get their start? Everybody recognizes the smiling face of Apollo Ohno now that hes won multiple Olympic medals. But Ohno once started out as an in-line skater, racing at local Northwest tracks.
Husband and wife finishers Will and Lorraine Miller, of Marysville, each placed first in their age groups in the Arlington Runners Clubs second annual Gleneagle Community Fun Run for Dollars for Scholars June 9. About 75 runners and walkers braved the rain and raised almost $1,000 for the local scholarship fund. The run started at Pioneer Elementary School and meandered through Gleneagle area, and golf-course community resident Jack Shouman whos son is a former NCAA 3:50 miler, escorted the pack of runners on his motorcycle.
In light of recent events surrounding the behavior of parents and coaches at Little League games in Arlington and its outlying areas, it is necessary to remind our parents and coaches of the importance of good behavior.
The bat of George Spady Jr. and the arm of Anthony Polanco carried Arlingtons Spady Eagles to victory over their city rival Thompson Pirates. The Eagles trailed early but rallied with some big hits in the late innings to win 12-9.

Scoring four goals in two games qualifies as a great week for any soccer player. Scoring four including during two Cascade League match victories is even better.
The Oct. 4 soccer match between the Lakewood Cougars and Sultan Lady Turks was decided in the first half on two Hayley Bustad goals. The two teams battled to a scoreless standstill in the second half and Lakewood tallied a 2-1 victory.
LAKEWOOD Neither the Arlington boys nor girls cross country teams were running at full strength at the Hole in the Wall Invitational at Lakewood High School Oct. 6, but coach Mike Shierk said kids stepped up to help the team.
The Lakewood volleyball team breezed past the Sultan Lady Turks on Oct. 4 behind the exceptional play of Liliya Kibitskaya. Kibitskaya did a little bit of everything during the three set 25-10, 25-22, 25-10 win. In addition to leading the way with 11 service aces, she also finished with six digs and seven kills.
John Rundle has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. The big defensive lineman pounced on three Granite Falls fumbles in leading Lakewood to a 28-20 victory. Rundle and the Cougar defense did an admirable job of stopping the run and forcing turnovers as Lakewood held on for a 28-20 victory on Oct. 5.
After an unexpectedly successful season for Lakewood fastpitch in 2007, the largely junior squad returns hoping to capitalize on their late-season surge during their senior campaign.

Five Arlington High School basketball players, Shea Struiksma, Zach Cooper, Eric Carlson, Griffin Ginnis and Blake Petersen, have finished their season at AHS and are playing with the North Sound Elite AAU Select Traveling Team and they won 60 – 51 at the first AAU Select tournament championship game during the weekend of Feb. 23.
