SMOKEY POINT — Dr. George Hussey put his money where his mouth was to help kids get ready to start school in an enjoyable way Aug. 15.

From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Hussey’s dental practice in Smokey Point offered “back to school” cleanings, sealants and more, as well as free Invisalign consultations, prizes and school supply giveaways.

Helen Hussey, George’s wife, estimated that their office paid nearly $600 out of pocket for those school supplies, as well as for food and refreshments for the tropical-themed “luau” barbecue and games.

Lindsey Norton, one of the office’s staff, noted that the event attracted 35 children, several of whom were first-time patients of Hussey’s.

“Our main goal was to help out families and give kids a good experience at the dentist by making it fun,” Norton said Aug. 15, decked out in colorful summer garb with her coworkers. “A couple of the kids had gone through some bad experiences before they got their teeth cleaned today.”

According to Helen Hussey, the office staff plans on making this “back to school luau” an annual event, and they’re already brainstorming events for adults as well.

“Maybe a spa day,” Hussey said. “We could have massage chairs, candle-lit rooms and even a car wash. We’ll see.”

Dr. George Hussey’s dental practice is located on 16825 Smokey Point Blvd. in Arlington and can be reached during business hours at 360-653-5197.
